Leap Motion and AR Drone

Leap Motion is a USB gesture control device you can connect to a computer which behaves much like a mouse or trackpad but in 3 dimensions. Available July 2013 for public release (you can pre-order if you like @ https://www.leapmotion.com/). It's noted for it's accuracy and response to finger gestures and it's compatibility with major platforms.

The following videos were shown to me by a colleague at work. I was so impressed I just had to post them. So here's a screenshot, read more if you want the videos:

So having moved desk from one side of the room to another, I have lost my view of the sea. Oh well, this is where technology has come to the rescue and returned my calming view...

Note: I think this is running in British Summer Time (BST) rather than GMT or it's clock is seriously off. Otherwise it's a picture from the future (see photo timestamps).

The Mermaid

'Twas a Friday morn when we set sail
And our ship not far from land,
We there did espy a fair pretty maid,
With a comb and a glass in her hand,
Her hand, her hand,
With a comb and a glass in her hand.

While the raging seas do roar,
And the stormy winds do blow,
And we jolly sailor boys were skipping up aloft,
And the land lubbers lying down below, below, below,
And the land lubbers lying down below.

Then up spoke the Captain
Of our gallant ship,
And a fine old man was he.
"I have married a wife in fair London town,
But tonight she a widow will be,
Will be, will be.
But tonight she a widow will be."

While the raging seas do roar,
And the stormy winds do blow,
And we jolly sailor boys were skipping up aloft,
And the land lubbers lying down below, below, below,
And the land lubbers lying down below.

And then up spoke the little cabin boy,
And a bright-eyed boy was he.
"I've a father and mother in fair Plymouth town,
And this night they will weep for me,
For me, for me,
And this night they will weep for me."

While the raging seas do roar,
And the stormy winds do blow,
And we jolly sailor boys were skipping up aloft,
And the land lubbers lying down below, below, below,
And the land lubbers lying down below.

Then three times 'round spun our gallant ship,
And three times 'round spun she.
And the third time 'round they all went down,
As she sank to the bottom of the sea,
The sea, the sea,
As she sank to the bottom of the sea.

While the raging seas do roar,
And the stormy winds do blow,
And we jolly sailor boys were skipping up aloft,
And the land lubbers lying down below, below, below,
And the land lubbers lying down below.

(Can you hear the ship, the little cabin boy and the captain going down to the bottom of the sea, the sea, the sea?)

The brilliant Tim Minchin using my favourite book as a response to "the Big Fat Quiz of the Year" show hosted by Jimmy Carr.

Room with a view E.M. Forster

Taking a break from website migrations. Thought I'd share some thoughts I was reminiscing of:

"We cast a shadow on something wherever we stand, and it is no good moving from place to place to save things; because the shadow always follows. Choose a place where you won't do harm--yes, choose a place where you won't do very much harm, and stand in it for all you are worth, facing the sunshine."

...

"...she reflected that it is impossible to foretell the future with any degree of accuracy, that it is impossible to rehearse life. A fault in the scenery, a face in the audience, an irruption of the audience on to the stage, and all our carefully planned gestures mean nothing, or mean too much."
