DJI Phantom FC40 - Fun at the races

Some more distractions. This is my filming of some Radio Controlled cars at the Torch Racing, UK event last Sunday. The FPV latency isn't good on this camera so it was no use here, so several challenges:
  • No FPV: Keep the quadcopter pointed at the car. I treat it like a First-Person-Shooter game where I strafe right moving forwards in an arc to go round corners. Then I learnt there were so many different angles and routes I could have taken (NTS: Take picture of whole track beforehand and plan a route).

  • Strong Winds: Fighting the wind to keep up with the cars. Keep as much space as possible between our marshall.

  • Not Near People: I could not risk flying low so I took a measure of about 3 people high and stood so I could see the height of our 1 marshall's head. To be honest, the reason I wasn't using my propeller guards was that I clean forgot which was rather reckless of me, but the winds were really strong, I'd doubled the cost of the quadcopter and that's my mate's girlfriend. I'll use the guards next time if the wind allows.

  • Do NOT break Line-of-Sight (LoS) for any participants Not distract the drivers or fly between them and their vehicle.

  • Avoid flying over track Especially if there is a vehicle underneath... Um, so I'm sharing the marshall's area.

I reckon they should make drones that go right a tipped over car or bring it back to the track... Then again, couldn't those cars self-right themselves?

Ok. back to work.

DJI Phantom FC40 Paint-Job and AerialFreaks Cyclops FC40 Gimbal Upgrade

I decided to repair the hull integrity of my DJI Phantom FC40 after a crash and sorta had the day off so... There are so many pictures because I wanted to be sure I could put it back together again, I'd recommend anyone who doesn't have a photographic memory to do the same.

My beloved DJI Phantom and the Hubsan X4 H107C

DJI Phantom FC40 - First Flight

So I just started another YouTube channel which I'll try to transfer my Joomla videos over to but in the meantime you can be subjected to my quadcopter videos. Here are a few quick ones, the Hubsan H107C and its Q4 Nano, then the DJI Phantom.

First up, the Hubsan X4 H107C for $60 USD filming at a reduced 720x480 25fps then further compressed by YouTube Capture app (but includes stabilization):

Leap Motion and AR Drone

Leap Motion is a USB gesture control device you can connect to a computer which behaves much like a mouse or trackpad but in 3 dimensions. Available July 2013 for public release (you can pre-order if you like @ It's noted for it's accuracy and response to finger gestures and it's compatibility with major platforms.

The following videos were shown to me by a colleague at work. I was so impressed I just had to post them. So here's a screenshot, read more if you want the videos:

Live WebCam feed of Bournemouth

So having moved desk from one side of the room to another, I have lost my view of the sea. Oh well, this is where technology has come to the rescue and returned my calming view...

Note: I think this is running in British Summer Time (BST) rather than GMT or it's clock is seriously off. Otherwise it's a picture from the future (see photo timestamps).

Thank You! :c)
