This extension will display a top 10 chart of your weblinks in a module on your Joomla website. As long as the weblink is published and approved, it will display. The default is to list 5 but you can set as many as you like. It is intended to work out-of-the-box with minimal setup (like the rest of my extensions - lazy Joe).
If you don't have pictures of the websites you link to, this module can generate these (by retrieving from a specified service - and then stores these to not keep downloading them). I've simplified the process so this version allows any "Administrator" or "Super User" (or Specified Joomla! Group(s)) to generate the thumbnails on-the-fly with just a click of a button. Did I mention this is all OpenSource and FREE?

Crowdsource
What is Crowdsourcing?
Crowdsourcing, in this context, is a type of participative online activity where interested parties can invest, suggest, and direct product development. By backing an idea, the idea with the most backing takes priority in the development queue. Combined with OpenSource, this is a huge step in how we develop our products and I hope you'll help us make this your product.
Installation

Really Important Note
This module has been somewhat popular and the services that offer FREE thumbnail screenshots are getting stricter with their terms of use. You should only enable thumbnail refreshes at the time of install.
Also note, this module will NOT generate thumbnails if you select "Public" as the authorized service group. I know it's the default option but you need to select an user group with higher privileges like "Super User".
The latest version is a personal edition which is just the last stable release with tweaks for my own website. There are a few enhancements I wanted to add but these will have to wait for when I get back from my winter holidays. Thank you for your continued support and patience!
Installation:
- Install this module ZIP using your Joomla! CMS extension manager.
- Go to "Content" > "Media Manager" > Create a folder for your thumbnails.
- Go to "Extensions" > "Module Manager" > Click on module to publish/customize it.
- Specify the images folder as the one you created in step 2.
- Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to "NO"
- Specify a group which can generate thumbnails and use the service.
- Login to front-end as a user belonging to the group specified in 3c.
- Keep refreshing the page until all thumbnails have been generated.
- Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to "YES"
- Logout
NB: Thumbnails will first appear blue as the service downloads/queues them.
Adding a weblink:
- Add your Joomla! weblink as per usual
- Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to "NO"
- Login to the front-end of your website as an authorized service group user (as specified in the module parameter)
- View a page that displays this module.
- Keep refreshing the module until the correct thumbnail is generated.
- Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to "YES"
- Logout
Refreshing displayed thumbnails:
- Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to "NO"
- Login to your Joomla! website front-end as an authorized service group user (as specified in the module parameter).
- View a page that displays this module.
- Keep refreshing the module until the correct thumbnail is generated.
- Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to "YES"
- Logout
[SUGGESTION] Refreshing all thumbnails without showing your website visitors:
- Create a Joomla page with a copy of this module (restricted to "Special Users"?).
- Customize the module to display all your links.
- Login to your Joomla! website front-end as an authorized service group user (as specified in the module parameter).
- View the page that displays this new module.
- Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to "NO"
- Keep refreshing the module until all thumbnails are generated.
- Switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to "YES"
- Disable the page / Logout
No Thumbnail Yet?
If the thumbnail hasn't been generated and you have opted to display thumbnails, then a placeholder indicating a missing image will display. You can create a "no_thumbnail_yet" image (if you have selected thumbnails to be PNG then this has to be a "no_thumbnail_yet.png" file, if you have selected BMP then this has to be a "no_thumbnail_yet.bmp" file). Save it to the images folder which keeps all your other thumbnails for this module.
No Semi-Transparency Effect?
Not obvious but to switch this off, the parameter "Semi-Transparent Effect" has to equal 1. If you put a fraction of 1, eg. 0.5, this will result in the thumbnail having 50% opacity to start with when the page loads; when you hover the mouse cursor over it the thumbnail will regain 100% opacity.
Target Window: Rokbox?
Demo'd on my personal website because I am using a RocketTheme template but this should work if you have RocketTheme's RokBox Extension installed. It simply opens an external link in a "lightbox" which is a pretty cool effect, see the front page of www.joellipman.com and click on one of my "recent weblinks" for a demo.
Semi-Transparency and Rounded Corners not Working?
The "Rounded Corners" effect on the thumbnails and popups are CSS3 driven. These will only really display properly in browsers that support CSS3 (Chrome, Firefox 3.5+, Safari 4+, MS Internet Explorer 9+). Other users should just see a straight angle corner. Semi-Transparency uses a CSS3 Opacity feature (works in pre-mentioned browsers as well as Opera 10+).
Administrators or Super Users to generate thumbnails?
The authorized group to generate new thumbnails USED TO BE Administrators or Super Admins/Users. Due to several requests, the module has been modified to accommodate any Joomla! group (specified in the parameters). It is NOT RECOMMENDED to set this to normal users as this will use up your entitlement to FREE prints extremely quickly. The "STOP Thumbnail Service" parameter was created to be economical to both your server and the free service. Use this wisely and you could get away with generating a million images for FREE!
Error on first install?
If you get something like the following error after upgrading/installing this module:
Warning: in_array() [function.in-array]: Wrong datatype for second argument in /public_html/modules/mod_quicklistweblinks/helper.php on line 214
This is because you have not selected a thumbnail "service group" authorized to generate new thumbnails in the module parameters. Set these and it should go away.
Upgrading?
This module is set to upgrade on install or something like that. I have not got the upgrade server for J16 working yet but soon. Also there's no need to delete a previous version of this module, just download the updated one, and install as per usual.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- All images in the folder for the weblinks have to be of the same file type (eg. BMP, JPG, PNG, GIF, or TIF). The program I had made to take the screenshots made them all the same type which is probably why I made the module think all thumbnails were equal. The module specifies the size of the image.
- The module keeps generating website thumbnail preview images on TWO conditions: 1) you are logged in to the front-end of the Joomla! website as an authorized "service group" user (as specified in the module parameter) 2) the parameter "STOP Thumbnail Generation" is set to "NO". (Important! remember to switch this to YES when you have updated all your thumbnails as each thumbnail is one entitlement of the first 100,000 for free. After that there may be a charge or images may come back watermarked/unavailable).
- The module only generates website thumbnail preview images for the weblinks that are currently displaying in the module. If your Joomla! website is still in development or you can afford to go a bit crazy, let the module display all your weblinks and then login to front-end as an administrator to generate ALL the thumbnails. Then customize and reduce the number of listed weblinks to what you want. Or set up a module which only the authorized "service group" has access to (Special?).
Joes Website Thumbnailer (JWT) (optional and still FREE)
If you want a better quality thumbnail, you can use my JWT program to generate one. It was created to support this Joomla! module. For batch processing (automated processing of a list of website addresses), it needs a text file with content in similar format to:
http://www.joellipman.com/|1 http://www.google.co.uk | 2 http://www.anotherwebsite.com/with_a_complex_address/?option=com_content&id=1 |6
The pipe character "|" tells the program that the first part is the address to take a picture of and the second part is what filename to give it. For Joomla!, that "1" is the ID of the weblink in the Joomla! database. Don't include the file type extension as you specify this in the "Output Thumbnail File Type" options of the program and it adds it to the filename automatically.
The program will confirm, process the whole list, then confirm again. It would generate using the example above and on default settings: 1.bmp, 2.bmp, 6.bmp.
More documentation or help for this program can be found on Joes Website Thumbnailer page @ Joel Lipman .Com
Free Website Thumbnail Services
Thumbnail Services will give you a limited number of free thumbnail generations. About 100,000 on average which is more than enough for our Joomla! website (unless you're reinventing the wheel by making a Joomla! Google Directory). Let's say I have about 340 weblinks, refreshing the page over 30 minutes while the thumbnails queue and get refreshed, this caused about 1,000 thumbnail generation requests. Which you'll agree is economical for both the service and your own server.
Services to use:
- Wimg.ca (unknown number of FREE prints - Tested: Add [http://wimg.ca/])
- BrowserShots.org (unknown number of FREE prints - OpenSource)
- ShrinkTheWeb.com (limited to 250,000 FREE prints)
- WebSnapr.com (limited to 100,000 and requires Signup - NO GO)
- Thumbalizr.com (limited to 200,000 FREE prints and requires Signup - NO GO)
- iWebTool.com (free image prints with linkback - not Chrome compatible)
- Thumboo.com (Signup required - NO GO)
- WebShotsPro.com (Not FREE but website allows 1 thumbnail free - :c)
- ThumbShots.org (unknown number of FREE prints - Tested: Add [http://open.thumbshots.org/image.pxf?url=])
- FreeWebsiteThumbnails.com (says "FREE" - Tested: Add [http://img.freewebsitethumbnails.com/?u=])
So what to do with all of these? Well sometimes a service can be busy, maybe you're near your limit for FREE thumbnails. No problem! This module only makes a request when you enable it to refresh all thumbnails (and login as admin). If you have a million links then hopefully, you can switch to each service as it becomes available and do them all for FREE!

I'll add it to the proposed future release.

I've added the random ordering to this module however if you are using thumbnail previews, you will need to generate these beforehand or you may just get the placeholder indicating image does not exist. You can create a "no_thumbnail_yet.png" (if you have specified PNG type images) in the images folder with the other thumbnails that will display instead.
This is so far for Joomla 1.5.x websites. A compatible version for Joomla 1.6.x or greater is expected later on today.
Hope you like it.

No thumbnails? Install the ZIP as per my instructions above. For thumbnails however, you need to create an subfolder in your website's images folder (eg. called "quicklistweblinks"), then specify this in the module parameter.
Check you stick to one type of image, whatever you prefer working with (eg. PNG). All images, thumbnails and no_thumbnail_yet image should be then in the format you set in the module parameter.
Then you need to make sure you have those images in that folder. This module will fetch new images remotely but will store these locally to display on your site. If the local images do not exist then you have to switch the "STOP Thumbnail Service" to NO and login with as an authorized user. Or you can upload your own images for use by the module but this is longer. My module should generate these automatically.
If you have a link, feel free to include it and I'll take a look. If it isn't LIVE yet then just give me some info as to how far you got in the documentation.
Cheers!

I need images in the folder or did they generate automatically in the folder? Did the folder need permissions?
If i have "no_thumbnail_yet.*", then it shows this thumbnail.
Thanks a lot.

Funker

The "no_thumbnail_yet.*" where * is the image type you specify in the module parameter (eg. "png"). If you switch "STOP Thumbnail Service" to NO this will generate the image screenshots from the service and copy the images from their server to your own Joomla! server (images subfolder specified in the module parameter). It then stores these images for use later so that you don't have to continue using the service and so your server uses local images.
The images should be generated automatically (check your Joomla! Media Manager), permissions will be the same as Joomla!.

I'd be interested to know if your images are being generated. Your server must also support cURL in order to download images from another website.

Absolutely right. I said to myself it would be a good thing to test all these upgrades and I thought I had. Only my test site for Joomla 1.6 wasn't generating new images because it already had them so it was a poor test.
I have since tested this again on a fresh J16 site and I owe a thousand apologies to Funker as she/he was spot on.
I've released a new version (1.5.2) of my module for Joomla 1.6.x+ websites. Tested successfully so please shout if it's still not generating these automatically.

Yes I picked up this bug. It's due to the double-slash in the URL for each link, so really just one slash '/' too many. The next version had to have the slash removed from \tmpl\default.php: Line 59: ..."JURI::base().'/index.php'"...
There are some other strange combinations of parameters that have issues which are also covered. One that will be relevant to your site is the ID to CLASS for W3C validation as I didn't expect people to put my module more than once on a page.
Will update this email when the next version is released. ;-)

Hmm... I have not managed to recreate the error. I have module version 1.5.3 working on a Joomla 1.6.3 website but I don't think it's the Joomla! CMS that's the issue.
Could you switch your debug mode on and email me the code that displays on the front-end? The part about SELECT ... ORDER BY ...

Yes sorry I meant STOP Thumbnail Service to No :-)
Also check that the Service Group parameter (can have multiple selections) highlights a group you belong to. Then login to the front-end and see if it generates anything.
If it still doesn't work, are you able to switch on DEBUG MODE and send me the code that outputs? You can email this for privacy.

All working OK, except do you have any idea why only the 1st thumbnail is showing in the module, and not the other 4?
The pops work 100%.
I have disabled the inline description so it only shows the title, plus I would like the thumbnail.

If you only have the first image displaying, can you check that the module parameter "Number of Previews" is 5 (if you are displaying 5 links). It will count from the top. Think the default is 1.
This was so that people could have the first link different to the others in the list.

I see the problem sort of. The weblinks are being ordered by the system date. This is the date that the core Joomla weblink component sets when you add a weblink. I modified it for someone to order by "created" which is a date that users can modify in each weblink options.
Cut a long story short, I'll release a version which has this as a parameter (for the user) to decide on whether date should be the created, system or modified date.
Webmaster
Posted Thu 11-Aug-11
I don't think that this is the problem.
It would be also okay, if the weblinks are ordered by the system date - but it doesn't work. so older weblinks are always on the top ...

That's a new one on me. The line refers to where the module wants to stop creating an image (copied from a URL to your server).
So I'm of the opinion that your server is not setup for cURL. Generate a phpinfo() page for your WAMP setup and see if it is CURL-enabled. Tony Spencer has a pretty good article on getting this setup on a Windows machine: http://www.tonyspencer.com/2003/10/22/curl-with-php-and-apache-on-windows/
If you can't get cURL working on your setup, you will need to switch the STOP thumbnail service to YES and generate the images yourself. (either go to the weblink, hit the PrintScreen key "prtscrn" and paste into an image editor. Or search my site for JWT which is a crude program that can take pictures of websites as well.
I hope all this helps. Irrespectively do get back to me and let me know how it goes.
Kind Regards,
Joe

Sorry I've taken so long in replying. I originally intended to write you a new version that would let you do this using the module parameters but ended with my beta version (http://demo.joellipman.com/joomla17).
In the meantime, you can use CSS as there are CSS names associated with the text so that downloaders could put their own code... The long solution is learn CSS...
The not so long solution but not immediate is to wait for a newer version of my module I'm afraid...

The color of the links comes from the color of links for that template. Perhaps there is a module class suffix on your other modules which display links in a different color?
Either way, open the template.css file of the active Joomla template of your website. Type the following:
.jqw_thumbnail a:link {color:blue}
.jqw_thumbnail a:visited {color:purple}
You can replace the words blue/purple with any valid CSS reference (eg. blue, #0000FF, rgb(0,0,255)).
Hope that helps!

Joe

So can you browse to the images on your server eg. http://<your_joomla_website>/images/thumbnails%20folder/1.png? Note that spaces aren't what I recommend but as a URL entity a space is "%20" (without the quotes).
If you like, send me either a picture/screenshot of what's happening or if it's online, then a link will help me see if there's anything.
The module has it's own debug mode which if you enable this, will display some messages on the frontend of the site (just under this module). Please copy&paste the messages to me.

Graeme
Posted Tue 20-Sep-11
Thanks for your message. If the length is being cut shorter than you specified in the module parameter, depending on the version you are using, there should be a character limit for both title and description. The early versions of this module limit by character length rather than width, increase the value in the module parameters "Inline Description Length" and "Inline Title Length".
Hope that helps!

I'm of the opinion that this is to do with the "thumbnail service group" parameter of the module. If you are using Joomla 1.5 then try selecting at least two groups authorized to generate thumbnails (eg. Administrators and Super Administrators).
If you are using my module for Joomla 1.6
then just check that one service group is selected and save the module.
Hope that fixes it!

I just have one question, my site is for tube videos so I need to make the thumbnail manually cuz the automatic system leaves a black square where the tube should be, having that said what I do is upload a jpg file into the folder (which I have set up with the permissions and all(works fine with the automatic ones)) then I insert it in the description filed of the post/link, but it wont show up on the thumbnail only text works. Im I doing it right?
David
Posted Wed 28-Sep-11
I don't know about the description part, that comes from whatever you put in your weblink entry via the Joomla admin panel.
This module's parameters need to be noted:
[list][*]Image Folder Directory (a subfolder of http://yoursite.com/images)[*]Image type (in your case JPG)[/list]
Upload your images to the image folder directory (eg. 1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg) the numbers as filenames are the matching ID numbers to the weblinks. If you switch this module's "Debug Mode" on, visiting the front-end of your website should display your top 5 weblinks and the ID numbers they're associated with.
A little confusing but feel free to get back to me if it's still not working.

Not sure if this answers your question but if you mean the "more links" link; that just goes to your joomla core weblinks component which I have no control over. This is only a module and not a component; I would suggest modifying your weblinks component to display the images and then get the module to generate the images for you.
Kind Regards,
Joe
Webmaster
Posted Thu 29-Sep-11
If you mean the joomla core weblinks component, then I don't really know how that works either as I had no involvement. I never got it to show images without a lengthy core hack to some core files. If it's showing an icon for all thumbnails then that is the component and you can either download a third-party joomla extension which replaces your weblinks component or you can resort to core hacks.

Joe

Yes if you are using Joomla 1.5 you need to select a minimum of two "Thumbnail Service Groups" in the parameters of this module. Personally I select "Administrators" and "Super Administrators". I would not recommend choosing "Registered Users" as this will use up your entitlement to 100,000 free prints quite quickly.
If/When you switch to Joomla 1.6+, this module only accepts the one group (until Joomla return this to like it was on Joomla 1.5).

The error you mention is with regards to a 3rd party extension called "db8 latest weblinks" and not mine I'm afraid.
If you got this error after installing mine "quicklist weblinks", it is possible there may be a conflict but I have just tried on a Joomla 1.5 site and both worked fine in tandem.
Also I don't see the "db8" module being compatible with Joomla 1.7.x websites. Even visiting their site "http://www.db8.nl/" doesn't say anything that they have upgraded the module to work in Joomla 1.6 or greater which is what they need to work in your Joomla 1.7 site.
Hope that makes sense.

I'm of the opinion that this is because I was told to use DIV layers instead of html TABLES. It only seems to do it on certain templates so I have to find a way round the various templates. It's usually a DIV within a DIV that causes this problem. I disable this popup in my Joomla 1.5 sites and use an experimental version on my Joomla 1.6+ sites (v2b) where this issue is fixed but I'm still working on cross-browser compatibility.
If you can think of another way (by the way it's not the z-index), I'll be happy to try it out. I'm just looking for a way to override the template's css code which causes this (for example the Joomla 1.7 default template uses div layers and doesn't have this issue).
In the interim I would suggest disabling the popups. I'll update this post by the end of the week with the progress status.

Joe

I have similar problem. Increasing number of characters didn't help. I increased to 250 , but still displaying about 20, then the title is cut to second line. Even the popup display is about 15 characters. Very narrow, difficult to display the text and read. :-?

Posted Sun 23-Oct-11
I've had someone else write in about this but it was due to their CSS. So the full title was displaying but with word wrapping, there was always going to be spaces at the end of the line.
The popup display is admittedly a nightmare on certain templates including some of my own. In future versions of this module, the CSS popup is gone and it uses the Joomla core mootools instead (Joomla 1.6+).
To fix this immediately, look into CSS text-overflow:ellipsis and word-wrap attributes. Also play with the parameters until there is an acceptable module displayed. I may include preset styles in the next version as it has been difficult to accommodate for the various combinations you can have.

Joe

There is a parameter "Specify Category" which uses the built-in Joomla command to list categories. As there are no subcategories for weblinks in Joomla 1.5 or earlier, I am presuming you mean Joomla 1.6-1.7 websites? In which case, I can confirm that Joomla 1.7.2 displays this parameter with the subcategories listed as well (prefixed with a hyphen/dash).
Kind Regards,
Joe

This is really odd as I've just tested this in Joomla 1.7.2 and the "Specify Category" also includes the subcategories. Admittedly this only seems to let you select one but I have the feeling it automatically selects links that are featured in subcategories.
For example, selecting "Root" displays all weblinks...

I'm trying to display on the homepage the most recent weblinks relating to a particular general subject (e.g. Transport). A weblinks page elsewhere would display the 'Transport' weblinks broken into more specific lists (Sub-Categories) such as 'Cars', 'Trucks', 'Motorcycles'. Any new weblinks added to 'cars', 'trucks' or 'motorcycles' subcategories would appear in the latest 'Transport' weblinks on the homepage.
Thanks for responding so fast!

Yes I've been having the same conversation with someone else asking about this and on reading your post I realise I haven't replied to you properly.
As far as I can tell, specifying a parent category will include all weblinks found in the subcategories of that category. For example, specifying "Root" includes all weblinks in your joomla site.
Kind Regards,
Joe
Webmaster
Posted Fri 28-Oct-11
Selecting ROOT does indeed give all links, however that includes everything in categories that are not wanted. Specifying a category, and not the Root, does not include subcategories.
I'm also having a problem with the links only taking up the left 50% of the module. I've included the website URL in the form so you wcan see your module at the bottom of the page, underneath Joomla's default weblinks module.
Thanks again,
Enzo

I've tried it with "Root" and you are right there it works fine.
In my case I have a category "general" with subcategotiers. For example: general -> shopping, finance.
When I'm selecting "general" than I only see the weblinks of "general" in the Quicklist but with "More Links" I can see all.
It seems the subcategories are only inlcude es in the QuickList when "Root" is selected.

I just found this and it is really cool. For organizations that have partners or links pages this is some real nice eye candy. I have a site that has a hierarchy for the links. Like our most important links first, etc. Can there be a setting for manual ordering from the weblinks order or some other way to control it? This would be the bomb. :D

I installed version 1.5.3.4 on my Joomla 1.6.4. Somehow the thumbnails won't show. I only see the link. The images are generated though when I check my thumbnails folder. Any idea what I can do wrong ?

After a bit of investigating, I found that Joomla is only built to use subcategories if you select "Root"... really silly... and there are no other categories using nested sets which include their subcategories...
So I've tweaked the query a little and I can now get the module to find weblinks up to 2 extra levels deep (including the category you specified).
I have made available for download version 1.5.4 of my module for Joomla 1.6-1.7 websites. Please try it out and let me know how this goes.

I have actually added your suggestion to the latest public version of this module (v1.5.4). You specify the weblink IDs separated by commas and it seems to be working properly.
Note that if there is a weblink ID in the module which you did not include in the "custom order" parameter, then this will appear first (at the top).

This is quite a common issue. It's usually just a matter of the setup in the "Thumbnail Service" section. But once your parameters are correct for your site, updating thumbnails consists of changing one parameter and then changing it back.
For testing/concept purposes:
[list][*]Make a folder to store all your thumbnails (joomla media manager)
[*]Specify "Super Users" as Thumbnail Service Group
[*]Specify the folder you made in step 1 for "Specify images folder"
[*]Set "STOP Thumbnail Service" to NO
[*]As a Super User, login to your front-end website (the one without the /administrator at the end)
[*]Keep refreshing the page in your web-browser until you are satisfied with the thumbnails
[*]Go back in to your admin panel and set "STOP Thumbnail Service" to YES[/list]
I hope this helps you get your images. Once you have these, the rest is all presentation and coloring.
I think the setup is the problem based on your post. If you provide me with further details, I may be able to see another reason why it wouldn't be working.
Kind Regards,
Joe

That's really a silly thing in Joomla that it only works with "Root". But any way.
I've tried the new version 1.5.4. When a don't select "Root" no Links are shown in the module itself. Could have done something wrong with the installation? (I've deinstalled the old one an than installed the new version)

The module is available as an upgrade so it isn't necessary to uninstall the previous version.
One problem that will happen with uninstalling and reinstalling, is that all your parameters might be reset.
If your images are still in your joomla media folder (yoursite.com/images/quicklistweblinks - where quicklistweblinks is the name of your thumbnail folder you specify in the module parameters). Also check that the right image type/format is specified (eg. if you specified JPG before and uninstalled, then the default I think is BMP in which case switch it back to JPG).
Uninstalling it kinda resets all the parameters to their defaults but I don't think it deletes your thumbnail folder so it should be a matter of just checking the module parameters.

Thank you so much for the donation. I have released version 1.5.4.1 for Joomla 1.5.x websites. Note that this version also removes the "50%" width specification that people have been complaining about but now I get complaints that the table is no longer in a nice grid layout... In which case restore the "width:50%" on the div at line 65 of /tmpl/default.php.
Hope that all helps!

1. If I set my inline thumbnail larger than 120 X 90, it repeats. If I set it smaller, there's a lot of white space on the right. How do I fix the repeating background, or just center the image and title?
2. When I don't use an image in the popup, the popup width is too narrow. How do I set the width of the popup without using a thumbnail image?
Valerie
Posted Tue 08-Nov-11
Thank you for your input, I can try to get all these issues automatically addressed in future versions.
1. I thought I had prevented this but if not it will repeat the background image. Adding no-repeat to the CSS class will fix this or creating a bigger image (manually unfortunately). If you want to center the background I think it's "background-position:center center".
2. The width of the popup is not specified at the moment. This was to allow a client to change it to whatever they want. What you can do is add the following code to a template.css file (for joomla sites usually "/templates/<your_active_template_name>/template.css"
.jqw_popup {width:200px;}
Where "200px" means 200 pixels wide. Change this to whatever.
I hope this answers your question, if not, feel free to post back.

If you are using the version for Joomla 1.5.x websites then you need to select a minimum of two user groups authorized to generate thumbnails (hold down CTRL key and click on the ones you want). For example I select "Administrators" and "Super Users".
If you are using the version for Joomla 1.6 or greater, then you only have to select one joomla user group in the module parameters (Joomla 1.6 didn't support multiple selections for this group and nor does J1.7 from what I can see).
This should fix your issue, if it doesn't, feel free to reply to this post.

From your Joomla 1.5.x Admin Panel:
[list][*]Go into Media Manager and create a folder to store all your thumbnails (eg. "quicklistweblinks").
Install my module using your Joomla Extension Manager (modules).
[/list]
Modify the module parameters:
[list][*]Specify "Super Users" as Thumbnail Service Group
Specify the folder you made in step 1 for "Specify images folder"
Set "STOP Thumbnail Service" to NO[/list]
As a Super User,
[list][*]login to your front-end website (the one without the /administrator at the end)
Keep refreshing the page in your web-browser until you are satisfied with the thumbnails
Go back in to your admin panel and set "STOP Thumbnail Service" to YES[/list]

I found a major problem with my Joomla 1.5.x version of the module which still had the same links as the 1.6.x version. I have released version 1.5.4.3 for Joomla 1.5.x sites with this link issue fixed. So thank you for bringing this to my attention.
I found that the other reason the weblinks would return a 404 page (Page cannot be found), were because they were not published (Publiceret?).
I have added another category which has no weblinks and then published all your links so that your links page still appears as before but with the links working.
I hope you find it useful!

I'm being silly because I don't understand. You can switch off all the extra text to just leave the thumbnails either via the parameters or with some CSS coding. I don't think my module knows what to do with menu items but it can get screenshots of the pages those menu items lead to...

The bretteleben one looks as if it's quite comprehensive as my module isn't a component and is supposed to do everything automatically based on the joomla weblinks you have and not on the Brettleben component weblinks. It's possible that if the Brettleben component is in use, that my module will not work.
I'll try to install the Brettleben one on a test site today and see if my module will still work with it.
Note that you can add a screenshot manually by simply naming an image "1.png" and uploading it to your joomla images folder (if you specified a subfolder in the module parameters than you need to upload it to that subfolder instead - PNG if you specified PNG and 1 if the weblink ID is 1).
Hope that helps. I'll update this post later.

The thumbnails are always the same size unless you made them yourself. The module will repeat it as a background image so it sounds like the width and height specified are too large. Try specifying a width and height which matches the size of the thumbnail (w=120 h=92?).

I have just checked and you are right! My fault for when I was downgrading the module ( it is initially designed for Joomla 1.6+ ) which I then downgrade for use in Joomla 1.5.x sites. Joomla 1.5.x refers to its weblink categories differently in the configuration and I had forgotten to change this.
I have made available for download version 1.5.4.4 for Joomla 1.5.x websites. It is recommended for websites using the weblink category parameter. http://www.joellipman.com/features/downloads/joomla-extensions/no-registration-required/for-joomla-cms/322-joes-quicklist-weblinks-1-5-4/download.html

I'm a little confused about this request. I have over 1000 weblinks so I'd imagine the module would take up a lot of space on my webpage.
We are in the process of upgrading this module to use Joomla core mootools with filter and navigation features.
I've noticed that a lot of people have been using the module as a component, so we should be releasing an equivalent component soon (expected Q3 2012).
In the meantime, can you not just put 100 in the "number of links" to display? If you only have 50, it only displays the 50 but will display more as you add them.
Cheers!

I get muddled over Joomla 1.5.x and 2.5.x versions but one of the options in the sort is "random". This should do what it says.
Not sure what you mean about integrating with other components. Do you mean third-party (non-official-joomla) ones? If so, I doubt it as Joomla CMS weblinks is already hard enough to keep up to date with :) But do shout, it doesn't hurt to take a look.

It have only one problem I think:
the link that this module will generate is something like this:
http://.../index.php?task=weblink.go&id=3&option=com_weblinks
it will work good but as you see there is a non-standard structure in this part: tast=weblink.go
we cant use . in the links address (w3c links standard.)
so what is solution? this module must generate link address in seo friendly address.

That's the first I've heard of it. It's going to be a problem for websites that have files called index.html. :c)
In any case, I'm not familiar with any such rule other than the following quote from W3C:
[quote]ID and NAME tokens must begin with a letter ([A-Za-z]) and may be followed by any number of letters, digits ([0-9]), hyphens ("-"), underscores ("_"), colons (":"), and periods (".").[/quote]
The solution if required is really simple, simply encode the period (".") with its numerical entity: .

I have not had this issue before. If you switch on the module's debug mode (module parameter), does it say it processed some images? If it isn't the service, then your host is possibly bugged that the service would have been writing new image files on every page load. Though I've left it on by accident a lot. Double-check that the images exist at the location that the module is looking at and that they're the correct file types. If you have a link I can take a look but I'll wait to see what you say.

This extension is for use with the Joomla! Content Management System (CMS - http://www.joomla.org/). The links are Joomla! weblinks and you add these using the Joomla! Admin Panel.
Hope that answers your question.

Thank you for your support. It's true the older version had this but it was confusing downloaders as they thought this was the name of the files (they already need to distinguish between weblink IDs and filename IDs).
I plan on returning this in the newer version which will contain this in a HTMLtable format (mootools sortable tables).
Please bear with me until the newer version is complete as I hope to address any outstanding issues with this extension.
Kind Regards,
Joe

Yes this module uses cURL to copy images from the thumbnail service server to your own server. It will need cURL to "generate" the images automatically.
Without cURL enabled on your server, you will need to do the images manually
1) Visit www.Screenshots.com
2) Generate the image (small or large)
3) Upload to your quicklistweblinks folder (or whatever folder you store your weblink screenshots in). You can use the joomla media manager or any File Manager/FTP application for your website.
The filenames of the images are "weblink_ID.ext" where ext is the filetype extension and "weblink_ID" is the ID reference of the link (eg. "1.png").
Hope that helps, I haven't yet devised a way without using cURL or without a WAMP setup to get the screenshots.

Seeing your first message, it sounds like you still need to assign which Joomla groups will be able to generate images (do not choose "Registered" users as this will use up your entitlement to FREE thumbnails very quickly). Also check the ThumbnailService is available and play with different settings until you get some placeholder images (will say something like "awaiting image"), then keep refreshing the page until the thumbnails are downloaded.
Hope that works for you.

Forgot to say, depending on whether you are using for Joomla 1.5.x or Joomla 2.5.x, try selecting one or two groups.
If you are using Joomla 1.5.x, then select a minimum of two groups authorized to generate thumbnails.
If you are using Joomla 1.6.x or later then select only one group.
The only 500 error I know of with this Module is when I installed the version for 1.6 on a Joomla 1.5 site. I can create another 500 error with a specific template from a commercial provider but later found this was due to a conflict of names.
Please try assigning either 1 or 2 groups to the authorized thumbnail generators and see if that fixes your problem. If not, feel free to send me a screenshot of what it's doing.
Kind Regards,
Joe

is there way to use different images for the thumb and the pop up?
if the image is the thumbnail from screenshots.com it tiles in the pop-up.
If it is the big image from screenshots the thumb only shows the upper left corner. I would want the thumb to just be a smaller version of the the full size image.
Greg
Posted Tue 06-Nov-12
It would involve a little coding. The reason the thumbnail repeats itself is because the image is set as a background to a layer of a specified width (popup or inline), if the image is smaller, you'll see it repeated.
To switch off the repeated background, modify the default.php file (line 46 in v1.5.4.2) of this module, change:
style="background: url(\''.JURI::base().$this_img_path.'\');"
to
style="background: url(\''.JURI::base().$this_img_path.'\');background-repeat:no-repeat;"
You can also repeat this for the popup image (line 47).
Without programming, you can stop the repeat by disabling rounded corners (set the value [image corner radius] to 0 in the module parameters).
Webmaster
Posted Wed 07-Nov-12
echo '<div class="jqw_thumb_preview" style="background: url(\''.JURI::base().$this_img_path.'\');background-repeat:no-repeat;" /> </div>';
$this_img_str_popup= '<div class="jqw_thumb_popup" style="background: url(\''.JURI::base().$this_img_path.'\');"/> </div>';
to
$this_img_path_small=str_replace('.', '_small.', $this_img_path);
$this_img_path_big=str_replace('.', '_big.', $this_img_path);
echo '<div class="jqw_thumb_preview" style="background: url(\''.JURI::base().$this_img_path_small.'\');background-repeat:no-repeat;" /> </div>';
$this_img_str_popup= '<div class="jqw_thumb_popup" style="background: url(\''.JURI::base().$this_img_path_big.'\');"/> </div>';
and remember to rename your image filenames as appropriate.
This example will mean that the inline image used is something like "1_small.png" and the popup image would be "1_big.png".

First of all , please let me thank you for creating such a great module/plugin and have it free for use :-).However, need you advice. Ive created the i mage sub-folder for the thumbnails in png format, set No to "stop thumbnail services", set service group to super administrator which is me but I still can't generate any thumbnails:(. The only consolation now is I have RoKbox installed and the preview is cool:). Please help:) Very much appreciate

Sounds like you've done everything you need to.
Are images appearing in the folder you created? If so then check the module parameters are pointing to the same place (and same file type "PNG").
If there are no files being generated in this folder, then try a different thumbnail service. I think the default is http://wimg.ca which is pretty good but if not there should be two others to select at the moment.
Hope that helps!

I've been messing with this extension for a bit and I like it a lot. My only problem is that it display's this error message in the module. And I have absolutly no idea how to fix it. I hope you can help me with it.
This is the error:
Warning: Creating default object from empty value in C:\xampp\htdocs\Intranet\modules\mod_quicklistweblinks\helper.php on line 264
Brendan
Posted Wed 12-Dec-12
Quite a problem and I don't have the right machines to replicate your error.
The error itself is where the module takes the ID of the weblink. This is standard throughout and there shouldn't be a problem as a weblink cannot exist without one.
Consider changing the order of the weblinks to either random or date and see if the error goes away, if it does, then there is a problem with specifying a custom order (if custom order is set, define comma-separated IDs to use).
Try:
1) Changing the order of the weblinks
If this doesn't work, try:
1) refreshing your nameservers
2) including the site folder name within htdocs
Hope that helps!

I considered websnapr but it requires registration which isn't quite right as people can download my module without signup.
I will look at other thumbnail generating services but the ones that are free and free from registration will take precedence.

As per my e-mail, choose a different authorized Thumbnail Service Group then "Offentlich". I have been told this means "Public" and since Joomla 1.6, there's something blocking public users from using the Joomla scripts to write to files on the server.
Test first with "Super User" (or whatever that's called in German) and make sure that works, then consider changing to a lower level user group.
I have my fingers crossed for you!

STOP Thumbnail Service "No"
Which Thumbnail Service "wIMG"
Thumbnail Service Group "Public"
Specify images folder "standart"
i think this are the most importan points

Try changing the thumbnail service group from "Public" to "Super User" and see if this generates the images.
Also check if this has created any files in your /images/standart folder.

I knew I'd forgotten someone. Keep it on "Super User" or whatever you login to Joomla as in the front-end.
Are you able to say whether your server has cURL enabled? Also try switching between wIMG.ca and thumbshots.org.
Also are there any images in the /images/thumbs/ folder?

I've got one question:
Is it possible to have all weblinks sorted by category at one single page?
Shalana
Posted Sat 26-Jan-13
I haven't programmed anything in the module to do that but other downloaders have shown me pages where they've replicated the module (so they have lots of copies of this module on a specific page) and then set each module to match one of their categories.
Alternatively, selecting "Root" as category will just show all weblinks irrespective of category.
Hope that clears things up!

http://www.randymcnabb.x10host.com/index.php/computer-programming/everything-else/joomla-direct-url-weblinks
Thomas
Posted Wed 13-Feb-13
The redirect instead of the direct URL was so that Joomla kept counting the hits of people going through your site to your weblink. If you remove this, then the hits counter for that weblink will not increase.
Anyway to do this you need to modify both the helper.php and the \tmpl\default.php file.
Changes to helper.php:
Add the following to line 270 (or just after if this is not blank)
$jqw->weblinkentries->$i->linkurl=$this_link_url;
Changes to \tmpl\default.php:
Find the line which starts by
<a class="jqw_thumbnail" href="'.JURI::base().'index.php?task=weblink.go&id='.$this_id.'&option=com_weblinks"
and change to:
<a class="jqw_thumbnail" href="'.$jqw_params->weblinkentries->$i->linkurl.'"
There should be two instances of this (which one is in effect depends on whether you've enabled popups or not).
Hope that works for you!

In version 2.1.1 this is in the helper.php file towards the end of the file. Replace the words "More Links" with whatever you want.
As it's something I've always meant to change (so no text is hardcoded), I've added this to version 2.1.2 in the language file.
Thx!

was showing thumbnails except a couple - I refreshed and they all show "comign soon" now. Any ideas why? Service group is set to registered.
Thomas
Posted Wed 13-Mar-13
Yes, it should take a few minutes if a lot of other sites are requesting a refreshed screenshot. Sometimes they will add text to the holding image so that you can see where you are in the queue. "Coming soon" sounds like a waiting queue.
Remember to STOP the service after you've refreshed all your screenshots otherwise it'll just keep overwriting the image on each load.
Also try service group as "Super User". Registered users will use up your free quota (200k/mo?) and the service may start adding watermarks.
Hope that helps

Does the table prefix for your Joomla 3.0 website use "jos_" (ie. does "jos_weblinks" table exist)? Check you also use the latest version of my module as that code looks like the old Joomla 1.5 one (still available to download for support reasons).

I'm not sure that this information is about am error but the fact is the thumbnails are missing!! Could you help me??
It's a joomla 2.5, and I am using a Rockettheme template in case it would mean something to you.

A good way to check if the thumbnails are being generated is to look in your Joomla images folder for this module (default is "/images/quicklistweblinks") and see if it has started creating 1.png, 2.png (if you have PNG selected, 1.jpg, 2.jpg if you have JPG). The number as filename is the ID of the weblink in Joomla.
If there are files there, then the module is somewhat working. The module has to download an image from a Thumbnail Service who will queue you (as lots of people use the same service) so their images may be blank or watermarked to begin with. Once you are not queued and the service generates real screenshots, copy these and store them offline as backup. The module will keep rewriting the images as long as the module parameter is not set to "STOP thumbnail service".
I hope that helps. Feel free to get back to me using this comment system.
BTW, this site (joellipman.com) also uses Joomla 2.5.x and a RocketTheme template, the module can make use of RT's RokBox (change "Links open in").

Wimg.ca gived 7 out of 37 images on my links page
Free website thumbnails.com gives blank images
Any ideas?
Thomas
Posted Wed 27-Mar-13
Yes I was rewriting this but it has become increasingly difficult to find free thumbnail service providers. I could integrate ones that you pay for but I feel that defies why this extension was free.
If you get screenshots generated that aren't messages saying "thumbnail coming soon" (and don't use thumbshots.org so much as I think everyone does and their queue gets full quickly), then save the images to your local computer so that the service doesn't overwrite the ones you're happy with.
When you switch the service off then you can manage the images, etc.
For the 7 out of 37 images, is the module setup to select the first 7 weblinks or have you tried specifying 37 instead of 7?

Thanks so much for your great job and also thanks for this much responsibility for answering all the requests and questions.
I wanted to know is there any way to show the weblinks in more than one columns?
My second question is that I have used your advice to Yahhr about changing the links properties in template.css but didn't get any result.
saraee
Posted Mon 01-Apr-13
1) Not at the moment, but some downloaders have shown me where they have simply added the same module several times to the same page to achieve this. Personally, I wouldn't recommend it as it was never designed to replace a component.
2) You'll need to add it to your active CSS template. If you have a page up that I can access, I can use google chrome (right-click on item and select "inspect element") this tells you what stylesheet is doing what to the image. Alternatively, hard-code the /tmpl/default.php file.
Hope that answers your questions :)
Thanks again for the interest!

thanks for your great weblinks module. One stupid question:
Do i have a chance of using it with version 3.0 or even 3.1?
Torsten

I haven't developed a version for 3.0 in a while but it seems to me to still be a little unstable.
It should only need a few changes. I recall there were some issues with legacy parameters but it installed.
Quite a difference to 2.5.x but no I wouldn't recommend it. I'll note it for the next version.
Thanks for the interest and if you want to try it out and let me know of any errors, it'd be much appreciated :-)

Thanks for such a fantastic module!
Strangely of late thumgnails.org doesn't seem to generate any images, only the placeholder, when selected - do you experience this issue also?
As to the other 2 options currently available, freewebsitethumbnails.com has disappeared, and and though wIMG.ca works, the thumbnails it creates are quite poor because they are thumbnails of only the top right part of a website...
manuelkuhs
Posted Sat 04-May-13
Yes unfortunately the completely FREE services are quite poor (thumbshots.org I don't tend to use, and wIMG is not great quality). I have added ones which are still FREE but need registration and which produce better quality images.
Webmaster
Posted Sat 04-May-13
This is probably a really dumb question, but where have you added it and how do I set up the registration? The module doesn't seem to be updated...
manuelkuhs
Posted Mon 06-May-13
No question is not worth asking :)
The ones that require registration are not registration from my site but registration with the service.
For example:
If you select BitPixels.com as the provider, then you need to go signup to BitPixels.com website and they will give you a customer key/reference. This is the one you put in the module.
We are still testing the new feature of using registered services but we need to determine if it is worthwhile creating our own Thumbnail service provider that we could limit to the usage of this module.
Note to anybody hosted on a Windows environment: You can setup a thumbnail service for FREE. Linux is more complicated.

Can I ask what browser you are using?
Also there is a timeout on the download page, if you are on that page for a while, the download link will become invalid. Just refresh the page in your browser and try downloading again.
The reason for the timeout is to stop automated scripts or programs people have been using to download my stuff. Direct links are also prevented.
Hope that answers your question!
