What?
A quick article on how to display a OK/Cancel popup which I use as a message to the user for debug purposes.

Why?
It's similar to javascript's message box or confirm box, only Android let's you redesign the dialog. For my purposes I have used an XML as the layout.

How?
This displays a standard Ok/cancel message popup which you attach to some event

Applies to:
  • Android Studio (Beta) 0.8.6
  • Google Android Maps API

What?
I am writing an app for a tablet running Android and wanted to include a Google Map. The following exercise focuses solely on creating an app which opens Google Maps at your current location.

How?
I couldn't find any instructions using the tools I had (Android Studio) which is why I've written this article.

Applies to
  • SITS:Vision v8.7.0
  • Uniface v9.6.03
  • Microsoft Windows 7
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP1) - 11.0.3128.0

What?
"Quick" may not be the right word, so this is a somewhat summarized article on how to get data out of SITS, up to running the monitors and populating an OUTPUT table in the SITS database. Note that this does not include steps thereafter in the Staging or Target destination which will be specific to your business requirements.

Why?
If you're developing in SITS, and you use the client, the first time(s) you do this, the task is rather daunting. Having done it a few times and run through a few, I thought I'd note this down to remind me if I ever work for a company using SITS:Vision again.

How?

What?
An article on how to declare an XML element as NULL using the attribute "xsi:nil". I'm going to use a very short example by providing a blank date of birth value:
copyraw
-- What I have:
<DATE_OF_BIRTH />
<DATE_OF_BIRTH_EUROPEANFORMAT>//</DATE_OF_BIRTH_EUROPEANFORMAT>

-- What I want:
<DATE_OF_BIRTH xsi:nil="true" />
<DATE_OF_BIRTH_EUROPEANFORMAT xsi:nil="true" />
  1.  -- What I have:
  2.  <DATE_OF_BIRTH />
  3.  <DATE_OF_BIRTH_EUROPEANFORMAT>>//</DATE_OF_BIRTH_EUROPEANFORMAT>
  4.
  5.  -- What I want:
  6.  <DATE_OF_BIRTH xsi:nil="true" />
  7.  <DATE_OF_BIRTH_EUROPEANFORMAT xsi:nil="true" />

Why?
Outputting from SITS:Vision to our staging environment, the application would only output blank values using single tags so we had to find a place to introduce it. On strings this has little worth, but on dates which could be NULL, this was necessary (unless we interpreted dates as strings which we don't want to do):

What?
You might be able to work it out from the online manuals but it took me a while, we wanted to bring back both the code and the lookup value in our XML to our Staging environment.

Why?
Let's take the country of birth of a person as an example as it is expected to be a long list and where just using the parameter &S is not workable. Instead I want to use &G[] and get both the code and the lookup value:
copyraw
-- What I have: no export format
<stu_codc>5826</stu_codc>

-- What I could have: export format set to get lookup value
-- &GCOD_NAME.COD.SRS
<stu_codc>England</stu_codc>

-- What I want: export format to get multiple values
-- &G[COD.SRS:•<•<COD_CODE.COD•>•>|•<•<COD_NAME.COD•>•>]
<stu_codc>5826|England</stu_codc>
  1.  -- What I have: no export format
  2.  <stu_codc>5826</stu_codc>
  3.
  4.  -- What I could have: export format set to get lookup value
  5.  -- &GCOD_NAME.COD.SRS
  6.  <stu_codc>England</stu_codc>
  7.
  8.  -- What I want: export format to get multiple values
  9.  -- &G[COD.SRS:<<COD_CODE.COD•>>|•<<COD_NAME.COD•>>]
  10.  <stu_codc>5826|England</stu_codc>

  • Ms-DOS Command Prompt (6.1.7601)

What?
A quick article on how to rename multiple files using the command prompt and a bit of string manipulation. This example will rename files which contain the string " (Copy)" and replace it with nothing (so removes it). The challenge here is the space character and delimiting by a string.

The Gist
copyraw
-- What I have
Image00001 (Copy).jpg
Image00002 (Copy).jpg

-- What I want
Image00001.jpg
Image00002.jpg
  1.  -- What I have
  2.  Image00001 (Copy).jpg
  3.  Image00002 (Copy).jpg
  4.
  5.  -- What I want
  6.  Image00001.jpg
  7.  Image00002.jpg

How?
Before I continue, the undo may work in MS Windows (Control key + Z) but don't count on it. I'm going to use a short batch process but to save time on the different ways of doing this, the example below uses a command prompt to a) create a batch file b) use it to rename the files c) delete the batch file.

What?
Trying to export a STU record but I want to use the XET template I created rather than the pre-installed XML export formats. When I try to export using data format XET, the system has never heard of it.

Why?
To test the XET I created, I want to see what the resulting XML will look like so that my post-staging phase can be developed as it will know what the data and label fields look like.

How?

What?
A quick article on an alternative to multiple lookups in SSIS. For any SSIS developer trying to create packages that need to decode a number of values into their full name/description (eg. "M" to "Male", "Prof" to "Professor").

Why?
Our extract phase in the SSIS package takes data from a source database and puts it in staging in the exact form it came through. Our transform package will convert the data and output it to the target system. For our package to decode what "M" means, it needs to look this up in a table on the original server. We had around 12 lookups to do, so you could do this:
But we didn't want to do this.

Applies to:
  • MySQL Database v5.0.45
  • MySQL Workbench v6.0.8.11354 build 833

What?
This is a quick article on how to get around the problem of backing up your MySQL database when attempting to "Data Export" using MySQL Workbench. This is not regarding the connection issue as I can connect to my database using MySQL Workbench (I have enabled the old authentication protocol). The error ONLY appears when I try to "data export" the database.

Why?
The quick solution for everyone else is to change/reset the password of the connecting database user, but herein lies the problem. When you read my workaround, you'll say that I haven't solved anything; but this is a production database I want to export for offline backup. I have to raise and log a formal change request and follow a workflow process in order to make a change on a live system to a service user account... Especially one used by the scripts to access the database-driven website.

How?

Applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise
  • AutoHotkey (see code for AHK version)

What?
Someone suggested an app that counts the days I have left serving my notice. I thought I'd go one better and have it calculate to the nearest second. I call this latest app "byeBU" and this is version 0.4 Beta (unofficial app).

Why?
Something to do...
